Damping or Dampening - which is it?
It can be a common mistake, but 'damping' is the correct term to use for when describing vibration reduction. Damping is any effect, either deliberately engendered or inherent to a system, that tends to reduce the amplitude of oscillations of an oscillatory system (see wikipedia). 'Dampening' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'damping', but the root 'dampen' means to wet something, or make it moist. Computer hardware may frequently benefit from vibration isolation, but doesn't often require dampening!
